One of my most rewarding training experiences was teaching facilitation skills to women in small groups to help equip them to lead development work in their communities. This training was based on the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and the “popular education” method he developed for use in teaching literacy.
The starting point of the popular education method is the lives and concerns of the people learning and is directed by what the learners feel they need. It is based on the belief that people know what they need and draws on the learners’ experience.
This learner-centred approach goes well with active learning, where learners are experientially involved in learning. In practice, learners do more than listen and take notes. Learners do things and simultaneously think about what is being done.
This is our approach when teaching communication skills through Profound Learning Experiences courses. Information about our training programs can be found on our website.
